Gynostemma: The Sweet Climber with Ancient Roots
At Trefoil Gardens, we’re always excited to share the stories behind the plants we grow—and few plants have a story as rich and sweet as Gynostemma pentaphyllum, also known as Jiaogulan.
Native to parts of southern China, Vietnam, and other parts of Southeast Asia, Gynostemma has a long tradition of use as an herbal tonic. Often referred to as the "herb of immortality," it’s been celebrated for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine for its adaptogenic properties, supporting the body’s ability to handle stress, promote vitality, and maintain balance.
One of the most compelling advocates for this plant in the U.S. was Joe Hollis of Mountain Gardens, a beloved Appalachian herbalist and teacher. Our mother plant came directly from his garden in western North Carolina, and we’re honored to continue growing and sharing this plant as part of his legacy.
Gynostemma is a fast-growing, vining herb in the cucumber family. It produces delicate tendrils, small star-like flowers, and lush green leaves that make a lovely groundcover or living trellis climber. Its leaves are slightly sweet, making it a perfect ingredient for teas, tinctures, or fresh garden snacking.
So why grow Gynostemma?
It’s adaptogenic—offering herbal support for energy, immunity, and longevity.
It’s easy to grow, thriving in partial shade and rich soil.
