The Financials of Profitable Small-Scale Farming
Building a front-yard farm
Our journey at Trefoil Gardens was highlighted as a testament to innovative strategies in small-scale farming. We have embraced a "multi-locational" farming model, transforming suburban backyards into productive agricultural spaces.
Our approach, inspired by the SPIN-Farming (Small Plot Intensive) program, began in 2016 when we collaborated with a neighbor to cultivate their yard. Today, our managed portfolio encompasses plots across six neighboring yards, totaling 15,000 square feet of row crops under cultivation, and again as much space allocated to small fruit production.
This model not only maximizes available land but also fosters community engagement and support. By partnering with our Woodstock neighbors, we've created a network that benefits from fresh produce and shared agricultural experiences. This collaborative effort has enabled us to sustain and grow our operations, demonstrating that with creativity and community collaboration, small-scale farming can thrive even in suburban settings.
