Fried green tomatoes are a classic Southern favorite, and this recipe from Trefoil Gardens will help you fry them to golden, crispy perfection! Using a combination of flour, cornmeal, and breadcrumbs, these fried green tomatoes have the perfect crunch, with a soft, tangy center. Serve them hot for a delicious appetizer or side dish.

Ingredients:

  • 4 large green tomatoes

  • 2 large eggs

  • ½ cup milk (unsweetened plant based milk can be substituted)

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • ½ cup cornmeal (we love to use cornmeal from Buckeye Creek Farm)

  • ½ cup bread crumbs

  • 2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt

  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 1 quart vegetable oil for frying

Directions:

  1. Prepare Tomatoes: Slice green tomatoes into 1/2-inch thick slices, discarding the ends.

  2. Set Up Coating Stations:

    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk.

    • Place flour on a plate for dredging.

    • In another dish, mix the cornmeal, breadcrumbs, salt, and black pepper.

  3. Coat the Tomatoes:

    • Dip each tomato slice into the flour, coating evenly.

    • Then dip into the egg and milk mixture.

    • Finally, dredge the tomato slices in the cornmeal-breadcrumb mixture, pressing to ensure an even coating.

  4. Heat Oil: In a large, deep skillet, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).

  5. Fry the Tomatoes:

    • Carefully place the tomatoes into the hot oil, cooking them in small batches of 4 or 5 slices at a time to avoid overcrowding.

    • Fry until golden brown and crisp on one side, about 2-3 minutes, then flip and cook the other side until equally golden.

  6. Drain & Serve: Remove the fried tomatoes from the skillet and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Repeat with the remaining tomato slices.

  7. Serve Hot: Enjoy your crispy fried green tomatoes while they’re still hot! Serve with a side of your favorite dipping sauce or enjoy them on their own.
