What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

The concept of Community Supported Agriculture has been around since the 1960s and was pioneered by Black Alabama farmer and advocate Booker T. Whatley. He referred to the model as "Clientele Membership Clubs" in The Whatley Diversified Plan for Small Farms, envisioning a system where small farms could sustain themselves through direct community support. This innovative idea laid the foundation for modern CSA programs, allowing consumers to invest in farms and share both the risks and rewards of each growing season.
